HBBA NEWS REVIEW
|
As a result of our HBBA chairman, Steve Murty spending
hundreds of hours in negotiation with Calderdale Architects
and Engineers, discussing the implications of the
pedestrianisation and re-paving of Bridge Gate and St George’s
Square to businesses in the town. We are pleased to inform our
members that work on Bridge Gate will commence, as requested,
after Christmas, in the quietest period for trade, Monday
morning, 9th January 2006 is the day set, when vehicular
access along Bridge Gate will be terminated for the
foreseeable future.
During the first phase access to the Bridge Gate Car Park and
servicing of the businesses on Bridge Gate will be possible by
entering and exiting Bridge Gate via Shoulder of Mutton end of
the street
After completion of the first phase which will include a
revised road layout of the A646 at West End new traffic lights
and re-paving as far as the entrance to Bridge Gate Car Park.
The workmen will move along Bridge Gate to tackle the section
by the White Swan at this point access to the Bridge Gate Car
Park and servicing of Bridge Gate businesses will be via Wm.
Holt’s end of the street using the new traffic lights at West
End
During busy periods the temporary traffic lights, at West End,
will be manned by two operatives to minimise hold-ups and
parking restrictions will be re-enforced on Hope Street and
west along Market Street. Wardens will enforce the parking
control orders in the rest of the town to assist the traffic
flow and fair distribution of the parking spaces available.
Please do not add to the disruption by parking illegally for
long periods of time. The hard fought-for FREE parking spaces
are for Traders to service their businesses and for customers
to park in.
Remember, each parking space used correctly can generate £100
per day of turn-over for the town. Take just 50 spaces over
300 days, which is £1,500,000 of turn over for the towns’
businesses – divide that by 200 businesses per year – yes that
is the potential cost to you of you or your staff or your
neighbour. Parking in a customer parking space day in – day
out!
The 3rd phase will be ‘The Square’ and Lees Yard, which could
be undertaken late summer, early autumn time.
We are also pleased to report that Calderdale have chosen a
contractor that has the best reputation for working with
businesses whilst causing the least disruption to the public.
However, should any member have any major problems during the
re-landscaping they should contact HBBA or attend monthly
meetings. The HBBA will then take up the issue with Calderdale
or the contractors on their behalf.
Finally, we have been granted the best and most appropriate
natural paving and lighting irrespective of cost and have
enjoyed a very fruitful relationship with all working on this
huge transformation for the town
