A Hebden
Bridge Brass Band
It
is not absolutely clear when Hebden Bridge Brass Band was
founded but in 1978 they held their centenary celebration. For
many years it was believed that 1878 was the founding year,
but an appeal to the local community for any information on
the band’s history a couple of years ago revealed that the
band was in existence around 1850.
In the early days of brass bands,
members were made up from the workforce of the local mills who
sponsored them and they, the mill owners, in return got
relatively cheap advertising for the mill and products,
particularly if the bands performed well and won prizes and
recognition at local and national contest.
Hebden Bridge Brand did very well in this respect and in 1911
saw its biggest contest victory becoming the 59th British Open
Champions. They returned to Hebden Bridge to find the streets
filled with crowds of well wishers wanting to share this great
occasion with their band.
A
more recent claim to fame was the band playing in scenes for
the film "Fanny and Elvis" as part of the Millennium New Year
celebrations in Hebden Bridge. The Film was released in
October of 1999.
There have been a string of recent successes wince in the year
2000 the band gained best 3rd section band at Ashton, with
some other good results in the open sections and later that
year the band won 2nd prize in the 3rd section of Wilkinson's
Northern Open. In 2001 the band won the third section of the
Pogson Bray contest (Huddersfield).
In 2002 the band won the 3rd section at
the Yorkshire area, the 3rd section at Rochdale contest, 3rd
at Tameside and achieving a clean sweep of Hymn Tune, March
and Test Piece at the Pogson Bray contest at Huddersfield Town
Hall in 2002.

The band provides learning, development and playing opportunities for young people aged 7 - 19 in the Upper Calder Valley. We currently run a B Band and an A Band with 3 rehearsal sessions per week and play at up to 50 engagements each year and undertake an international tour every two ears - we visited and played in Strakonice in the Czech Republic this summer.
We currently have 50 young people actively involved with the band which is run entirely by the voluntary efforts of the parents of band members.
The Hebden Bridge Junior Band will be playing at the Carols in the Square this year on Christmas Eve.

interest in educational facilities”.

Hebden Bridge Little Theatre
HEBDEN BRIDGE LITTLE THEATRE was formed in 1924 and has
been producing plays almost continuously ever since, in places
as various as the Co-operative Hall, the Picture House, the
Band Rooms on the park, and for a prolonged period (1937
-1977) in the Ground Floor of the Trades Club.
This came to an end with a major fund-raising and building
project that culminated in the opening of the present 120 seat
theatre in 1993.
The theatre has a delightfully intimate atmosphere, and the
bar and waterside patio make a visit to the Little Theatre a
thoroughly enjoyable experience.
