Hardcastle Crags is known as Britain's "Little Switzerland".
It is a beautiful wooded valley is owned by The National Trust
and very popular with walkers and ramblers.
There are guided walks and other activities throughout the
year. Tel 01422 844518 for further details.
In August 2005 National Trust opened Gibson Mill in the heart
of the Crags as an educational and community centre run by
sustainable energy. The mill, built in 1800, ended its textile
production in the 1890s and took on a new lease of life as a
tea room, dance hall and roller-skating rink.
Derelict since the 1950s, the mill will be the National
Trust’s flagship environmental project and an international
role model for sustainability.
Gibson mill is now home to some fascinating exhibitions and
demonstrations of sustainability, displays on the history of
the crags and the mill and a new cafe.
